Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior representative said the attack rendered him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
